What I'm Reading

Yes indeed, reading is fundamental. However, if there's one thing I truly miss about my road Amazon life, it's all the books I devoured during my cross-country jaunts. It's just not as easy to read copious amounts whilst transiting on the El.
  • Magic Bites, Ilona Andrews. Stress drives the need for some fab urban fantasy brain candy. And I have such a sweet tooth...
  • Grotesque, Natsuo Kirino. Was so execited when another of Kirino's books was translated and published Stateside. Her first was by far one of the best reads of the past couple of years. This one, not so much. Usual wonderful characters and detailed view into life in Modern Japan, but hasn't pulled me in yet.
  • Generation Loss, Elizabeth Hand. If you haven't read Ms. Hand, you don't know what you're missing. While she tends to get pegged as a "genre" writer, the quality of her prose (not to mention fab female characters) knows no boundaries. While I've traded this one off for fluffier stuff during low brain energy times, this doesn't mean this isn't a transfixing read. Bound to be one of my tops for 2007.

What I'm Watching

Okay, I've never actually watched Because of Winn-Dixie. There are some movies that don't even merit plane watching.
  • Netflix #1: Letters from Iwo JimaSmacks of a "spinach" movie (it's good fer ya), but it's also just plain pretty good.
  • Netflix #2: The Thirst Two words - Aw - Ful!
  • Netflix #3: Little Children Loved, loved, loved the book (which speaks volumes to Perotta's writing skills, as I could give a rat's ass about the "troubled" lives of parents). I feared the movie would try and ligten up the tone of the novel, but thankfully did not.
  • TeeVee: HexOh joy of joys, my fave BBC series returns for another season!! Just in time to rescue me from Heroes withdrawl.
  • TeeVee: Best Recipes in the WorldMark Bittman may be a big goober, but he is an entertaining one.
